Helping You Prevent, Diagnose and Treat Gum Disease

Did you know that periodontal disease, more commonly known as gum disease, is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults? But maintaining a daily oral health routine and partnering with Jeffrey T Bonk DDS can help you avoid that.

Periodontal disease is an inflammation and infection of the gum tissues. It includes the stages commonly known as gingivitis and periodontitis, and most commonly occurs when plaque and tartar is left untreated on teeth and gums.

Understanding Gingivitis and Periodontitis

Gingivitis includes a variety of mild to moderate symptoms, such as:

  • Red, swollen gums
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Bleeding gums caused by normal brushing and eating
  • Chronic halitosis (bad breath)
  • Difficulty or pain chewing

Periodontitis is a more advanced form of gum disease where gums begin to pull away from teeth, creating small “pockets” along the gum line. Tooth loss, bone loss and damage to gums and soft tissues can occur with periodontitis.

Reducing Your Risk

You can reduce your risk of gum disease by brushing and flossing at least twice each day. You should also have a dental exam and professional cleaning at least twice each year. Schedule your appointment with Dr. Bonk or Dr. Skopek today.
